What is a Wing Chun wooden dummy used for?

A Wing Chun dummy is a thick wooden post with three arms and a leg. These are mounted on a slightly springy frame and represent a stationary human opponent. However it is actually an energetic representation of a human and is used to master the execution of proper technique.
